Mindy Kaling brought laughs and lace to the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday in Chicago. The comedian, who introduced Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, chose a navy blue Monique Lhuillier sheath dress. The brand’s Night Sky Guipure dress incorporated tulip lace details, scalloped edges and a scoop neckline.
The look hails from Lhuillier’s fall 2024 collection, which was inspired after the summer launch of the brand’s London flagship. “As a result, Lhuillier’s fall collection combined elegant separates (an emphasis on having versatility and diversity for in-store shopping) with subtle, timeless, dressy Lhuillier twists on English fashion,” WWD reported in its review.
Lhuillier’s line had themes like florals, including blown-up hydrangea prints, 3D botanicals and tulip guipure lace.
Kaling completed the dress with black d’orsay sandals that featured scalloped details — an apt match to Lhuillier’s scalloped hemline.
Speaking to the audience, Kaling recalled her time bonding with Harris over their Indian heritage during a video segment where they made Indian food. Harris’ late mother Shyamala Gopalan is from India and her father Donald J. Harris is Jamaican.
Kaling later changed into a black outfit and introduced Nancy Pelosi.
The actress was among a star-studded roster, including Kenan Thompson, Bill Clinton and more political power players, Oprah Winfrey, and performances by Stevie Wonder and Maren Morris. The 2024 Democratic National Convention is taking place in Chicago. Held to officially nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate and affirm her choice of Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota for vice president, the event also had its share of fashion statements.
On Tuesday, Michelle Obama took the stage in a Monse crisscross jacket. On Monday, Jill Biden sparkled in a custom Ralph Lauren dress and Hillary Clinton brought her signature style in a tweed suit.
The DNC will end on Thursday with Kamala Harris’s official speech as the Democratic nominee.
