NORTH KINGSTOWN − An East Greenwich couple has bought the island in Wickford Harbor that was once owned by a Narragansett sachem, and then Rhode Island founder Roger Williams.

On Aug. 29, Daniel J. and Caitlin E. Marusak bought the 9-acre island from the Cocumscussoc Association, which runs the nearby Smith’s Castle historic site, for $416,000, according to town tax records. The asking price was $899,000.

The couple, who have two young boys who love going to the beach, will reserve most of the island for conservation purposes but use some of it with their children, according to Daniel Marusak, a lawyer who works with veterans.

“It’s an interesting and historic piece of property,” Marusak told The Providence Journal on Thursday. “My goal is to be a good steward for the island and a good neighbor.”
