Victims of fatal Route 34 head-on collision in Tioga County identified: State Police

Five people, three from the Bronx, one from Pennsylvania and another from New Jersey, have been identified as the victims of a deadly collision Friday afternoon on state Route 34 in the Town of Barton in Tioga County.

Three people were killed at about 1:26 p.m. after a two-vehicle head-on collision in the southbound lane of state Route 34 in the Town of Barton, according to New York State Police based at Owego.

State police identified the drivers as 42-year-old Janesa Lorenzo of the Bronx, who is now in critical condition, and Athens, Pa. native Gary Sinsabaugh, 68, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The front seat passenger in Lorenzo’s vehicle has been identified as Delroy A. Christie, 56, of the Bronx. Christie was transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. and suffered what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the rear seat passengers, Carlos M. Lorenzo, 41, of the Bronx, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other rear seat passenger in Lorenzo’s car, Sabrina M. Surita, 38, of Manahawkin, NJ, was transported to Robert Packer with life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital.

According to the preliminary investigation, Lorenzo was driving north in a Toyota Highlander on state Route 34 when it crossed into the opposite lane and struck Sinsabaugh’s Chevy Silverado pick-up truck head-on.

Sinsabaugh, according to his obituary, was born in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School in 1974. He was an avid racing fan who built his own car to race at Chemung Speedrome and traveled to different tracks to watch his favorite driver, George Kent. When his nephew decided to race too, he was “his biggest fan,” states the obituary.

Sinsabaugh spent time with his grandkids, “babysitting, hanging out, working on projects with them and playing games at the racetrack.”

There is a GoFundMe account set up for Surita with a goal of $10,000 to cover funeral expenses and lingering affairs. According to the organizer, Erica Freeman, Surita was a “cherished daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend” who “brought light and love into the lives of everyone she met.”

The investigation is ongoing, according to state police, who were assisted by members of Great Valley EMS and Waverly Barton Fire.
